Hi Theresa,
I also have problems loading my models on my linux PC. I'm not sure if
our problems are comparable. But anyhow its interesting to see how other
people handle large databases.
At the time I have 400 statically loaded tiles (each 28k geometry + 200k
texture ). In the future I need to increase my database to some 10000
tiles( with dynamic paging).
1. Loading all 400 tiles is no problem on
- ONYX, Perf.3.0
- INDIGO II, Perf.3.0
- Linux PC, Suse8.2, Single Proc, PIII, 1.4GHz, Perf.3.0.1
2. Loading stops at ca. 36 tiles on my
- Dell dual proc, 2x Xeon 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, Suse 8.2, Perf.3.0.1
- The first 30 tiles load fast, but than loading gets slower and
slower. So it seems, that some memory leakage problem arises.
3. Now your problem. I guess, performer blows up geometry models
dramatically. Even a 4 corner face is blowed up to 60k. See my posting
to the mailing list 2 years ago. Sorry, I don't have an answer for this.

Posting from 08/09/2001:
High,
I have a question about memory allocation.
In my application I load over 1400 very small models ( tiles for a
terrain database ). Each tile only consists of the 4 corner-vertices.
The disk-space for every of this .pfb files is 600 bytes. Loading all of
these files with pfdLoadFile(".pfb") will result in an error after
loading 1000 files:
PF Fatal/Resource: pfMemory::new() Unable to allocate 59416
bytes from arena 0x64000000.
Try using pfSharedArenaSize() or env PFSHAREDSIZE
to increase the arena size
(currently 307200.00 KBytes) and check for adequate setrlimit()
values and available space on swap (or pfTmpDir()).
It seems to me, that each file is internally blowed up to 60k. But even
this should be no more than 80MB at all. If the shared arena holds by
default 256MB, where is the problem ?
Any ideas ?
----------------
Please let me know, if and how you can handle your data on a dual proc PC.
Jürgen
