re: perfly not work when have Performer3.0.1+RH9.0+NVIDIA mix

Any chance that the person who managed to get perfly working
(http://oss.sgi.com/projects/performer/mail/info-performer/perf-03-05/0030.html
or see below:
"I fixed this manually compiling the GLUT version in the latest Mesa - and
manually installing - however, this had to be forced")
could elaborate?

A simple install of the Mesa GLUT3.7 libs in the manner prescribed in the
Mesa README (make, make depend) does not work (Note: the install did not
call for compiling, nor a force flag, nor would I know how/where to do
that...it does have some suggestions, which I followed, but to no avail)
-- perfly still sits still, no window appears, and quitting it still
crashes the system. Having tried all the tricks suggested, and searched
endlessly for more info, tho I've learned a lot, I am almost to the point,
well, a cookbook recipe here wouldn't hurt my feelings. I just do not know
enough about the dependencies to get this working. Or could this GLUT
solution be that system specific?

I suppose I should be more patient...mebbe NVIDIA or shrike or sgi people
are working on this (certainly I have pestered enough people!!!) and will
eventually come up with something. (Unless I have an exaggerated idea of
the numbers of people who use performer and linux, they should certainly
be do so -- people who use NVIDIA drivers will finally upgrade from, say
RH7.3, where all this works, yes?)...but, in the meantime, if anyone has
been able and is willing to post some sort of a (more) rigorous outline of
how they managed, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

PS I wouldn't mind a cc on any response as for some reason i am not
receiving any posts from this list -- I was alerted through someone who
posts on an xfree86 list. Thanks.

previous info-performer posting reads:
Hi,

The reason why GLUT does not work has been explained by some bright person
on the NVIDIA discussion forum. Look there for the precise explanation. A
brief outline follows:

When the new GLUT rpm for rh 9 was made, RH did not have the latest NVIDIA
drivers and so could not test against them.

Some old SGI extension which had hitherto not been support by the standard
opengl library was suddenly supported and, therefore, when glut was
recompiled against this opengl library, the extension was used. (its
potential use had been a part of glut since the dawn of times). For
this reason glut expects the extension.

Unfortunately, the NVIDIA drivers do not support the extension, hence
something breaks.

I fixed this manually compiling the GLUT version in the latest Mesa - and
manually installing - however, this had to be forced. I hope a better
solution will turn up - i.e. a Red Hat package.

Red Hat is aware of the problem, but apparantly it has low priority.

/Andreas
