Hello Tom
The Dell 610 has a Radeon 7000 (m6) card.
Original ATI drivers only Supports Radeon 8500 an 9xxx cards.

The only Solution to get Performer running is to install the demo of
XI Graphics Driver.
It doesn't crash here, but the demo reboots the X server every X
minutes.......
I think it's a Problem of XFree in combination with Radeon driver and
Performer.
