actually im not getting behind how/where you apply your shader stuff (do you
use pfShader?).
so, dont know if this is of any help for you.

normally when i use the shader (pfShader) to utilize opengl extensions, i set
pre and post callbacks in the shader-pfGeoState and do the managing of the
textures i need by plain opengl.
this might not be the "cleanest" way, but it works for me.
