Hi Nick & all,

Since others might be curious about this now that 3.0.1 is out, I'll
copy the answer back to the external mailing list. But internal
SGI'ers, remember that the ambassador forum is the preferred place for
your internal questions about Performer.

No. The license issued for 2.5 won't work with 3.0.x (nor vice versa).

However I should mention: 2.5 licenses will work with all 2.5.x
and 3.0 licenses will work with all 3.0.x.

There's two choices, which depend on whether or not the user has also
purchased a service contract.

If they have a service contract, then their contract entitles them to
upgrades at no additional cost. This is the ideal way to go.

If they don't have a service contract, then the user must purchase new
3.0 licenses.

So to clarify: for users who currently have 2.5 and would like to
upgrade to 3.0.x, but don't want to pay full price for a 3.0 license,
the best & most cost-effective method is to purchase a service contract
for your copy of Performer 2.5, and then call SGI support and ask for
your free upgrade to 3.0. A service contract costs only a fraction of
the cost of a new license. Even if you purchased 2.5 previously, you
can add a service contract now.

> c) How to get the CD for 3.0.1 ?

Our CD mechanism is something that needs a little bit of explaining.

The way things are done currently: the CD's that we ship are for the
base version, version 3.0 right now. The package also includes a
license key for 3.0 (and all 3.0.x).

Then each quarter we release a maintenance update which is available as
a free web download. That's 3.0.1 and is what's on the website now.
(And in the case of the IRIX version, it's also bundled with whichever
IRIX 6.5.x update is current)

So you purchase a copy of 3.0 and get a CD (and a license) in the mail.
Sometime later, 3.0.1 releases and you can download it from the SGI
website and keep the same license you got with 3.0.

Some folks who follow these things very closely will be interested to
know, we've decided to make an improvement to this starting with 3.0.2.
We'll be updating the base CDs to 3.0.2 (and 3.0.3 the next quarter,
etc) so that new purchases will get the current version on CD, won't
have to go to the website for the updates since the base version
released. The web release will also match.
