Hejsan !
So, very soon I am about to publish my diploma thesis on
MPEG Z/Alpha, TexMPEG and high-resolution MPEG :-)
MPEG Z/Alpha is an MPEG2-based video format that is able to encode Alpha
(transparency) and depth data (stored as 8-bit or 16-bit integers).
I've written encoder utilities, based on the MJPEGTools (mjpeg.sf.net),
that can encode MPEG2 video streams with arbitrary resolution and all the
"classic" features, and embed a video depth stream.
The input format I'm using is the RPF-format (Rich Pixel Format), for
which I've developed an RPF reader library (a modification of the
_original_ 3DS MAX SDK Windows sourcecode, and with Discreet's official
permission to release it as GPL, ha ! ;) )
The decoder library, TexMPEG, is an graphics-API agnostic video decoder
for IRIX & Linux, that is even able to divide decoding work onto several
CPUs (based on Patric Ljung's original idea of "video striping"), which
means that 2200x576 res MPEG2 videos can be played _at full framerate_ in
a VR-theatre connected to an SGI Onyx3 :-)
I would like to invite you to:
.) take a look at

http://www.geofront.se/products_software_mza.php
.) read through the preliminary version of my diploma thesis
http://www.geofront.se/mza_exam.pdf
and its presentation
http://www.geofront.se/pres.ppt
And bombard me with any comments/questions/flames etc. you have :-)
(It's my birthday today, so I can take it, easily ;) ;) )
If someone wants to help me taking this code further, I will be glad to
take the challenge and transform this into a real nice OpenSource project
(like I have done with mjpeg.sf.net and marvel.sf.net before ;) ).
So don't be shy ! ;)
Servus,
Gernot
