O.K. I know, that the original message is very old.
I guess, Louis has already solved this problem, or gone mad.
But I hope, that my message helps other people with similar problems.
The www does not say too much about it.

There went something wrong with your GLX Libraries.
Either there are some of it missing, or some of it are
redundant in -- and thats the problem -- different versions.
This could be caused by a previous card installation.

Solution:
in /usr/lib a "ll libGL*" should show you something like this:

libGL.a
libGL.libGL.so -> libGL.so.1
libGL.so.1 -> GL/libGL.so.1.0.4191.nv_glx
libGLU.a
libGLU.la
libGLU.so -> libGLU.so.1.3
libGLU.so.1 -> libGLU.so.1.3
libGLU.so.1.3
libGLcore.so -> libGLcore.so.1.0.4191
libGLcore.so.1 -> libGLcore.so.1.0.4191
libGLcore.so.1.0.4191

Next take a look in the /usr/X11/lib.
If there are some files with the same name, but different time-stamp,
your problem is nearly solved.
I copied the files from /usr/lib to /user/X11/lib and everything
was fine. A probably better solution would have been to remove
the old, redundant libraries from /usr/X11/lib (I will try this out
today!).

By the way: with the command "glxinfo" you can check, in which way
OpenGL is installed, software-emulation or hardware-acceleration.
And with the program "gears" you can take a look at the performance
of your card.
A software OpenGL makes between 90 and 160 frames per second, a
hardware accelerated (nvidia 4800) is "slightly" faster and makes 1700
frames per second (yes - this is ten to twenty times faster).

so long (and thanx for all the fish).
Harald
