well, that's maybe the problem with the vrml-loader in the gcc3-rpms
(and maybe the reason why sgi removed all vrml-files from
.../Performer/data)
the inventor-loader has similar problems if you try to use it with
inventor-libraries built with gcc2.9x - and is reported to work fine if
you build the inventor-libraries from source with gcc3.2

i've sent a message about my problems with the vrml-loader to the
performer mailing-list (and now a copy of this thread) - no response so far.

hopefully someone from sgi has more information about this.
