We've used Unwinders quite successfully in our applications. I believe the
TPG web site even has some sample code and driver files for IRIX.

For sound, have you looked at OpenAL? It has support for many platforms,
including IRIX. I wouldn't exactly call it "stable", but it is usable
and useful.
