Doing this tells performer to look for and grab a multisample visual is
one is available. This would allow you to toggle anti-aliasing on and
off.

if you enable anti-aliasing by setting the GL environment variables, AA
will just be on all the time. the disappointing fact is that if you're
comparing to IR, both NVidia and ATI's AA techniques don't look all that
great. if you're a gamer and have never seen real AA before, then the
scene should look less aliased.

try enabling the performer environment variable and bring up a model or
scene in perfly, put it in wireframe and look real close at some lines.
toggle AA on and off and watch the lines go from thin and jaggy to thick
and fuzzy :-)
