One thing you might try is to have separate scene graphs for the wire-frame and the normal geometry. You could save memory by sharing geometry. Since the scene graphs are separate, the draw callbacks can be optimized for their tasks.
I don't know how efficient it is, but it might work.
The human brain is only used to 10% of capacity.
The rest is overhead for the operating system.
