Thanks for the replies. Basically what I've found out
for anyone interested, is that for c++ you need to
compile with g++ and link with gcc. This appears to be
what the Performer c++ example makefiles are doing.
AFAIK none of the performer c++ examples use the std
library (iostreams, stl, etc) so I had to also
explicitly link in libstdc++ when using gcc. I still
don't know why I didn't have to do any of this with
RedHat.
