   that's nothing to do w/ models. LD_LIBRARY_PATH is used as the search path
   for shared libraries. since we're using performer inside a vr framework
   which depending on the application may use a lot of third party stuff, we
   have to construct an LD_LIBRARY_PATH "on the fly" that may become (very) large.
   btw. for models PFPATH is the environment variable to be used.
