Regarding buttonfly-like behavior on Linux:

The original XFORMS library (still available in compiled form for many
platforms) had a demo program which was like a mini buttonfly. It read a
text file and executed the program when you clicked the button.
Hierarchical buttons are supported.
You can get this by pulling down xforms (just to get the demo program code).
You can use the newer FLTK library (open source) to execute the program. I
have used fltk and the demo program on both IRIX and Linux. The code is
transportable.
