Dear Performers and Spelunkers,

Anyone who's interested in something to keep them busy on their flights
to San Antonio is welcome to download and try a virtual reality library
that I've been working on for a while. It works well with Performer,
or with vanilla OpenGL. It works with many UNIX varients, and with
many input devices, and is designed to work with differnt style VR
displays, though I must confess I mostly do my testing in a CAVE.
There are many additional device interfaces that are currently being
developed, but will have to wait until after SIGGRAPH. For that
reason, and because there are still some quirks that need to be
worked out, it is not ready to be labeled version 1.0, but it's
getting there, and it is usable now.

You can download the library, plus both Performer and OpenGL example
applications (simple tutorial programs) from the library web page:

        www.freevr.org

There is documentation, but not as much as I have planned. It should
certainly be enough to get you started, plus the example programs
demonstrate all of the important features.

If you have questions or need help, feel free to email me (or ask me
in person at SIGGRAPH). You may be able to find me at the Morgan
Kaufmann Publishers booth -- my book is finally coming out, but
unfortunately not until late August. There will be galley prints
available to peruse at the booth though, for those of you who are
interested. The book has changed a lot since we begun, and we
have enough material left for a wholly separate book, but the
product we ended up with could be used as a textbook for those
of you teaching VR classes. And for the sake for the CAVE user
group readers, here is a URL for the book:

        http://www.mkp.com/books_catalog/catalog.asp?ISBN=1-55860-353-0

I'd be happy to talk about the book at SIGGRAPH too, of course.

Enjoy, see you at the BOFs,
        Bill
