I've had good results with recent releases of the NVidia drivers under
Linux. I've never tried stereo. The release notes are very good. Any
special modes would be described there.

At least in XFree86 4.2.0 there is no 3D support for the 8500. The 7500
has support, but it occasionally crashes on me and it isn't as fast as
a similar NVidia card.

ATI has a closed source driver for the FireGL line (similar to the
NVidia driver). The 8800 may be an exception, since it is similar the
the Radeon 8500. I haven't used any of them.
Good luck,
