Hi Performers,
I know it has been discussed before, but I didn't find a conclusive answer
to the old problem of using active stereo with Linux and Performer.
Could you please help to fill the gaps and open questions in the list
below? I first state the requirements for our system (VR), features that
would be nice to have and then possible graphics card that could fulfill
these needs. At the installation site, we have an older Onyx 2 with 4
R10000 CPUs and and IR2, so the PC hardware should at least outperform
that configuration.
If anybody is using one of these cards successfully under Linux with
active stereo, I'd be glad if you could provide feedback!
System Requirements:
- Display Mode: 118 Hz Active Stereo at 1280x1024
- PC Hardware: Dual Processor Athlon or P4
- OS: Linux
- X-Server: Xfree or XiGraphics, others?
- Software: Performer 2.5
Must have:
- Active stereo
- High geometry throughput
- Decent Linux support (no crashes!)
- Available in September 2002
Nice to have:
- Full-screen anti-aliasing
- Vertex and pixel shaders
- Lots of texture memory
Possible solutions:
- 3DLabs Wildcat 6220
+ Lots of texture memory
+ Supported by Xigraphics server
? Anti-aliasing at 1280x1024 stereo?
- Expensive (is it worth it?)
- 400 MPixel/s fill
- 3DLabs Wildcat 6110
+ Supported by Xigraphics server
- (same as 6220 + no anti-aliasing at the target res.)
- Geforce 4 Ti4600
+ FAST (4GPixel/s fill)
+ Fully programmable (Vertex and pixel shaders)
+ Cheap
? Seems to have no active stereo support under Linux
without using external sync doublers or other ugly hacks
- ATI Radeon 8500
+ Seems to have good performance (?)
+ Vertex and pixel shaders (supported with Linux?)
+ Cheap
+ Xigraphics support, active stereo
- ATI FireGL 8800
? 3D Accelaration with Linux? Which Xserver, which driver?
? Active stereo with Linux?
? Performance?
- ATI FireGL 4
? 3D Acceleration with Linux? Which Xserver, which driver?
? Active stereo with Linux?
? Performance?
Best regards
