I would recommend to use Okino Polytrans converter which outputs openflight models ...

It comes as a stand alone app and as a plugin for Max - though first you have to export into mative Okino format then in standalone convert to openflight ...but it works ....

Also there is a plugin from 3dpipeline for Max which converts max models into openflight ... but I never seen it in action.
