Are you sure that you currently have 2.5 installed?
I went through the same thing. The only license that I could find on
the SGI web site was for Performer-2.5. Under 2.4 (and before) the
license feature was "performer". For 2.5, it is "performer2_5". So
the new license is incompatible with 2.4 (or before).
If you upgrade to 2.5, then the current demo license works fine.
I also found out that if you bought <=2.4, there isn't a free upgrade
to 2.5. I have yet to talk to sales to find out what the upgrade costs.
