On an IR, you can get a visual with 12 bits/component for RGBA or 16 bits
for component with intensity and alpha. This translates to 4k and 64k
different colors that can be stored in the framebuffer. Now, on the DAC
side, I believe that an IR scans out video with 10 bit dacs, so you can
see 1k discernible colors.
