model types

I'm creating models in 3d Studio then using NuGraf to
convert them into Wavefront (*.obj) model files.
These look nice but sometimes run slow. I'm just
curious to what model types have been found that are a
good tradeoff between quality and speed in performer.
Is it best to convert to the .pfb models native to Performer?
