Dan if you are on IRIX you can use par to help debug this problem. par
-isSSl -o par.out <application_name> look in par.out once your app
finnishes you can usually find an error code which tells you why this is
not working.

I know in your letter yesterday that you mentioned you are not calling
pfConfig, you probably should call pfConfig and try creating a
pfPipeWindow that calls the openNewNoPort method. Probably would not be
a bad idea to call pfFrame at least once.

I am not an expert on this but par should help you solve this. If you
are on LINUX strace has similiar capabilities.
