I have been using SGI library IFL(Image Format Library) successfully on the SGI,
which supports many formats including jpg, png, tga, and rgb. 'man 3 ifl '
should get you started. The man pages contain API information, as well as sample
code.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is available on non-SGI machines, so if
cross-platform operation is important, then alternatives might be in order. (Any
suggestions? Perhaps imlib?)

Kumar.
