As a low-tech workaround, I've found that using pfLODs can achieve a similar
effect to detail textures -- just add an additional "detail texture" LOD to
your model that uses the "detail" texture but the same geometry. Using
different material/colors is an obvious extension. No it's not perfect, but
it's much better than nothing.
