Best Linux Configuration

I'm seeking advice for the best configuration on a Linux platform using
Performer.

We are currently using a Onyx2 IR3 with a Barco rear projector and
large-scale 3D projection screen to develop real-time photo realistic
models. I'm looking to develop a sister system that we can use for
off-site demos and thought a Linux box would be best since we can use
our existing Performer models.

Can anyone suggest the best configuration of components to get close to
what we're already using in 2 price ranges. We're looking at price
ranges of 2 - 3K and 10-12K GBP. I'm needing to know the best graphics
boards, processor, motherboard and type of RAM for each price range.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
