Hej !

(this is slightly offtopic, if someone can give me any other references
to other mailing lists/specialists I would be grateful :-) )

I have been working on an MPEG2-player for IRIX for some months now
during my spare time (the goal is to play videos on an Onyx2 which runs a
VR-theatre), and have by now succeeded in porting parts of mplayer
(mplayer.sf.net) so that it plays MPEG1- and MPEG2-videos with video and
audio (still unsynked) in Performer ... if you don't touch it ;)

But since I would rather like to avoid reinventing the wheel (that is,
reinventing all the abstract layers that are necessary to produce an
abstract API that others can use, too), I had a look at different
high level media APIs ....

One of them was GStreamer (www.gstreamer.net) which is about to become the
current standard in Linux regarding media treatment (a lot of developers
start to collect their projects there, it's like quicksilver flowing
together ;) ) ...
the problem is now: I consider myself rather competent in programming C
(and C++, if so necessary), but I know definitely that I _won't_ be able
to write an assembler core in IRIX to handle the thread scheduling ;)
(that is what's needed according to
http://www.gstreamer.net/gstreamerstatus.shtml
, see Platform Support).

So what I'm looking for is a media enthusiastic MIPS-on-IRIX-assembler
guru that is willing to implement this assembler core - do they exist ? ;)

I could fix the rest of the plugins within some weeks/months....

My other alternatives are Digital Media SDK, dmSDK,
(http://oss.sgi.com/projects/dmsdk/)
and OpenML (www.khronos.org),

but dmSDK's development seems to
have stopped for now (no mailings on the list, no CVS access, no release
since January) and OpenML (www.khronos.org) is only available as a 1.0
spec yet ;)

If anybody has tips/comments on this topic, please mail me ! :-)

Servus,
  Gernot
