 Subject: GeForce 3 + CAVELib + Performer + Linux = terrible slow

 Hi,
anyone of you working with the configuration stated in the subject ?
Because this turns out to be terrible slow.

Our config:
CAVELib 3.0
Performer 2.4
Elsa Gladiac 920 Geforce3

tested with different linux distributions and with different nvidia drivers
including the newest one.

It seems that the problem is because of the CAVELib, because Performer
without CAVELib is very fine.
But when using CAVELib there seems to be some kind of timeout or lock
problem.

Help and comments greatly appreciated,
bye cubic.

 Subject: Geforce 2 Ultra + Performer + Linux + PC = Z Puffer Problem

Hi,
the next problem is if we are using Geforce 2 Ultra, performance turns out
to be good enough, but there is a huge Z-Puffer problem, the ordering of the
objects is not done correctly.
Any hint on this ?
On Geforce 3 the Z-Puffer problem seems to be solved.
bye cubic.

We are not working with the same configuration, but a similar one,
with our own tracker access (serial connected Flock of Birds) and
experienced exactly the same, just with Performer 2.2, and we tested
both Elsa Gladiac 920 and ASUS V8200.

In contrast to your experience, we don't get good performance even
without using a tracker (mouse steering).

Something we found is extremely many system calls to getpid() and
gettimeofday().

Hi!

Since I'm new to performer programming, I've played around with it the last days. My main interest is to load .dxf objects from AutoCad and to do little animations with them. My main problem is to rotate an object around a point of its surface. pfDCSRot does only rotations around an axis, so I tried to move the object on that axis, rotate it and to move it back. For doing that I need the coordinates of that pfDCSnode. Any ideas of how to get them?

Hi Robert,

We have a CAVELib 3.0 install using Performer 2.4 on Linux with a GeForce3 (ASUS board I believe). I just got it all working a couple of days ago so no extensive experience, but we are not noticing any performance problems... Our CAVElib apps that I have tried seem to work fine. We have had a couple of other problems, but... What version of gcc/g++ are you using? We are at 2.96 under RedHat 7.1 and 7.0.

Hi again,

Oh yes, I should add that we are not using any tracking. That is we have development CAVElib licenses for the Linux boxes so we are using simulator mode for interaction... That may be the significant difference (although Andreas said they do not get good performance even in simulator mode).

Cheers,

Brian

Hello,

Is there a sample of performer code using Volumizer 2.0?

I did not find any on the current distribution. I have the sample code for the previous version of OpenGL Volumizer, but the new version seems to be very different.

Thanks,

Marco

The Performer code for Volumizer 2.0 was not released with the current release. But we will be giving out the code for that on our product web site soon. I will post a message on info-performer as soon as it is available.

Thanks.

From: "Giovannelli,Jason S." <jgiovann++at++mitre.org> Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 19:11:19 -0400 Subject: multi-layer fog banding

hello, I recently tried to add multi layer fog using these values for a test:

cloud topcolor 0.4, 0.4, 0.4 cloud botcolor 0.4, 0.4, 0.4 tzonetop=5000.0 cloudtop=4000.0 cloudbot=3000.0 tzonebot=2000.0 fogtop=1000.0 ground level=0.0

The general fog was set to NULL, and the ground fog set to a light Exp2

Though it seems to behave normally at first(while viewing straight ahead), when looking up at an angle, you can see significant lines at (what appears to be)the bounderies of the layers. The color depth is set to 24 bit. Is this simply because i am looking through multiple layers?

thanks, Jason
