I don't know why, but I do know you're not alone -- I've had the
same problem running RedHat 6.2 and 7.1. The "-E sky" solution
was the only thing I've seen that shed some light (literally) on both the left-
hand perfly menu and the scene itself. I have not run perfly on SGI.
Can anyone comment on whether it is necessary to use the "-E"
with SGI perfly to see anything?

Also, the "-E sky" switch under RH6.2 lit up the menus on
tux.pfb, cane.flt, and iris.flt but did not (for example) make the
menus on town.perfly visible. After I upgraded to RH7.1, installed
the Nvidia driver, and added the list of fonts suggested earlier on this
list, I noticed that I can now see the perfly menu on town.perfly, but
didn't check to see which of these three things caused the improvement.
