question abt shared memory

Hi.
I was wondering how do i create shared memory.
Here is the original problem:
create a system:
1)process 1 acts like reader/dispatcher: this process will read the list
of
strings from an input file(provided) into an array in shared memory and
fork off child processes for processing each string.
2) acts as a handler: uses assigned index to get string from array.
determines whether or not the string is a planidrome or not.

I will really appreciate if you reply.
even some hints will help.
