Project title: Understanding Disorientation in Cluttered Virtual
Environments
Investigator: Dr Roy Ruddle
(http://www.iri.leeds.ac.uk/people/researchers/ruddle.html)
Location: Informatics Research Institute, School of Computing, University
of Leeds

Application closing date: 6 July 2001

I am looking for a research student to work on the above project, which is
seeking to understand the causes of disorientation that people suffer when
they travel round 3D virtual environments that are small, but cluttered
(they contain obstacles to movement). The problem of disorientation is so
severe that participants in earlier experimental studies frequently got
"lost" while searching room-sized spaces. An understanding of the causes
has implications for any type of VE application that involves navigation
(e.g., virtual tourism, ergonomic design, or training). Needless to say,
Performer is the s/w base for this research!

The ideal candidate will expertise in computer graphics and/or human
factors.

Full details of the project are at
http://www.iri.leeds.ac.uk/opportunities/cluttered-ves-advert.html

The project is funded by the EPSRC and commences in October 2001. A
standard EPSRC stipend will be paid. Only UK students should apply.
