render to a file

Is there any way to render a 'flt' model and save the image to a file
without displaying the image on a screen. I'm trying to create a
performer render application that can run as a cron job and process a
directory of 'flt' files creating an image for each model. I've
modified simple.c with a pfuSaveImage call and this works from a login
shell; however, it fails as a cron job somewhere in the X11 library
calls. I assume think it's trying to create the window with no X-server
running.
