I think the best way is to export Max Files to ASCII ASE format
(standard 3dmax option since 3dmax 2 if i remember), then implement yourself
a performer loader from that ASE file (the syntax is relatively clean).

You can probably adapt the ASE parser you find in the new NVidia OpenGL SDK

I think its a more clean way than writing a plugin into max and design your own format.
Writing/Adapting an ASE parser fives you a more scalable and standard solution.
