Hi Rob,
We have also encountered this problem.
As best I can determine, it was associated with the NVIDIA 0.9-5 drivers.
After installing these drivers, the X server would no longer start
automatically. We had to login at the command prompt and then "startx" to
get the server up and running. After upgrading to the most recent drivers
(0.9-6), the X server seems to behave itself!

Hi all,
I'd like to say Thanks to those who responded to my calls for help. They
were very much appreciated. I know have Performer Town running at 60Hz
using RedHat 7.0 and a Geforce 2 Ultra graphics card on my pc. One problem
though, my desk top environment doesn't boot up, I only get a shell screen
from which I can type everything in and this is working perfectly well.
Does anyone know why the desktop will not initialise properly. I have
looked in the config files and as far as I can tell they look ok.
