By "desktop environment doesn't boot up", do you mean that the window
manager doesn't start? I assume that since you're running perfly you at
least have X running and an xterm to start programs from.
If you're talking about the window manager not starting then I think I've
seen this before with GNOME. For me, it was right after I changed my
user id and I forgot to changed it for the /tmp/orbit-flynnt dirrectory
(flynnt is my username, i suppose it would be /tmp/orbit-r.body for you).
So, that might be one place to look.
