I don't remember ever getting a corrupted partition after not installing
the patch and rebooting. If you have the kind of gfx board that requires
patch10002, usually just the Xserver would hang. You should still be able
to boot to single user mode or run level 3, etc.
In any case, the instructions for installing the patch are located in the
README. And they do say to not reboot the machine before installing the
patch.

You should just be able to add "1600x1200" to the modes line in the screen
section in your /etc/X11/XF86Config and it should just work. If it
doesn't, you can call/email support.
