It looks like setmon can only be used to change the video modes on local
pipes. It's not one of the standard Xlib programs which accepts a -display
flag.

Take a look at the documentation for the Sgi Video Control
(XSgiVC) extension. This extension is an api for doing exactly what you
want.

Alternately, you can call setmon before you initialize performer on your
performer machine. You can do this with the fork and exec calls, but try
the other way first.
