Be sure to install all required packages from the Linux Faq page
http://www.sgi.com/software/performer/linux-faq.html
And be sure to download and compile Mesa 3.3 or Mesa 3.4 from the Mesa site
http://www.mesa3d.org
http://download.sourceforge.net/mesa3d/MesaLib-3.3.tar.gz
The version that comes with Red Hat (Mesa-3.3.5) has a bug.
The rpms found on Tom Flynn's page where not readable to me.

Get the .tar.gz and set the issue the following commands as root
   tar -xzf MesaLib-3.3.tar.gz
   cd Mesa-3.3
   ./configure --prefix=/usr
   make
   make strip
   make install
   install -m 644 include/GL/glext.h /usr/include/GL

The textoutput from configure about "can't construct makefiles" can be ignored.
This is because the MesaDemo files are not there.
The 'make strip' command is optional. It strips all the debug info from the libs
The install command is needed because it was missing in the Makefile.am that was in the
.tar.gz file.

If this works that you can install the accellerated version for your 3D card.
