The resolution of your z-buffer depends on the settings
of the near- and far- clipping planes.

Put the clipping planes as close together as you can
afford: Put the near clipping plane further away, and
place the far clipping plane closer. This will increase
the resolution of you z buffer (only in the specified
clipping range ofcourse).
