line of sight culling?

Hi,

I'd like to find out which objects can be seen by a character I'm
trying to simulate. These objects may not necessarily be in the viewing
frustum. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best approach
this? Is it possible to set up a channel for this purpose and render from
the character's point of view into this channel, which will not actually
be displayed and somehow find out the list of objects from the scene that
have been drawn into this channel? Thanks.
