Performer Users,
On behalf of the Performer team at SGI, it is with great pleasure
that we are announcing today the RELEASE and immediate availability
of OpenGL Performer version 2.4.
For all the details, please see:
http://www.sgi.com/software/performer
OpenGL Performer is the foundation of a powerful suite of tools and
features for creating real-time visual simulation applications on
IRIX & Linux systems. OpenGL Performer 2.4 is built atop the
industry-standard OpenGL graphics library, includes both ANSI C and
C++ bindings, and is available for both the IRIX operating system and
GNU/Linux.
OpenGL Performer 2.4 brings with it many new features. Some highlights:
* pfShaders for sophisticated, programmable model shading.
* pfVolFog to support the rendering of layered and patchy fog.
* Multipipe scalability.
* Support for multi-process operation in Linux.
* Support for frame-accurate timing control in Linux.
* pfRotorWash to create the visual effect of down-wash in
Helicopter simulation.
* Double-Precision Matrix support for rendering extremely large
databases where objects are far from the origin.
* CPU Priority specification to allow multiple run-time processes
to run on the same processor.
* Anisotropic filtering in Linux to improve texturing visual quality.
* Support of Multi-Texture in Linux for the application of
multiple textures upon an object.
* Improved pfLOD behavior to allow custom evaluation functions.
* Speed and functionality enhancements for pfFlux, pfCliptexture,
and pfLightpoints.
* pfHyperpipe support for the DPLEX hardware option.
* The new "EventView" performance-tuning tool for instrumenting
and tuning your OpenGL Performer application.
* Many new sample code.
And as always, specialized techniques for peak performance rendering!
In addition, today we are launching a new and unique OpenGL Performer
Open Development project. Source code for the OpenGL Performer
programming guide examples, the OpenGL Performer sample applications
perfly, clipfly, asdfly, and fogfly, the OpenGL Performer utility
libraries libpfdu, libpfui, libpfuiD, and libpfutil, and many of the
file loaders contained within libpfdb are all available on the SGI
Open-Source web site for you to download, and are open to Developer
contributions. For more information, please see:

Stay tuned for more details about the OpenGL Performer 2.4 release
and its features. Much more information will be presented at the
Friends of Performer meeting at IITSEC 2000.
We're delighted with the result of this tremendous effort and wish to
thank all of you for your support, feedback, and participation with
us over the past year. We hope you'll enjoy this new release.
Sincerely,
The OpenGL Performer Team
