I've been looking thru this topic lately and I agree with Sakns, I saw something
somewhere that mentioned letting a browser choose the LODs for you. I thought that
was weird but wasn't relevant to what I was doing. But I've only been reading DOCs
for Multigen/Creator and Performer Prog Manual (insight) and man pages and I would
bet such a statement is there some where, probably pasted in by accident by some
tech writer late one night, and never caught yet (til now).

It sounds like you may be confusing Performer with VRML, which you view
in a browser, where you can do this. Performer always requires the LOD
ranges to be specified to work properly. You can then optionally have
the system stress level modify these LOD ranges to maintain a more
constant frame rate.

Ths is what I would expect.

AFAIK, this is only relevant to VRML scenes viewed in a browser.
