shared memory and semaphores

Hi,
sorry for asking a basic question.
I'm using Performer 2.3.1 on linux platform, as this
version of performer on linux is not supporting
pfGetSharedArena, I'm taking care of shared memory.
now my doubt is how to control this shared memory.
what is the best way...using Semaphores or using
Pipes. can any one help me in this regard. a sample
code in either of the procedures is appreciated.
