William:

I had a similar problem with our INDIGO2 systems (GR3-Elan) which have a 13W3
Monitor Connector. They refresh at 72 Hz by default. When I connected a Nokia
monitor to the same system, the refresh rate dropped to 60 HZ--I think this would
happen at system boot.

No matter how many ways I tried to get the Nokia Monitor, which can easily Sync
to a 1280x1024 ++at++72 Hz RGB signal, to refresh at 72 Hz, the INDIGO2 would drop it
back to 60 Hz. Reconnecting an SGI monitor caused the INDIGO2 to sync at 72 Hz,
although I think it at least allowed refresh rate changes if you specified one. I
think the 13W3 interface has a bi-directional Data Line and the system may query
to find out what Monitor type is out there. When it doesn't find an SGI or
recognizable Monitor, it sets the refresh rate to the something "safe". I could
be wrong.

In short, I had a similar problem with a non-SGI monitor that I could not
resolve, but could live with.

Good luck,
Pete
