Hello Harry,
You're right when you say that Nvidia FSAA is done by multiplying the
res by 1.5 or 2 and then scale back down. But this is not all the job
done. The card must apply a filter on the new picture before to show it.
Consequently I think it's normal that the frame rate is lower in 640 *
480 AA than in 1024 * 768.
Anyway I have two remarks:
- when you use Performer graphical stats with FSAA, your frame rate gets
dramatically down (in my case 20/30 fps FSAA in 800 * 600 without stats
-> 12/15 FPS with graphical stats. Maybe could Tom or Angus explain
this.
- The lost when you enable FSAA is more reasonnable with a geforce 2
GTS.
With a Voodoo 5 5500, I can only give you Windows result (Quake 3 test,
OPEN GL game):
1 - according to Linux sites, the windows drivers are better than that
for Linux (between 5 and 12% better), this is not the case for the
geforce (only between 1 an 3 %).
2 - The FSAA quality is better on the Voodoo card
3 - With a big processor, you have the same type of result when you
compare Geforce and Voodoo with FSAA enabled
(4 - this should change when the voodoo 6000 will be available)
Hope that helps
