Are these two statements equivilent?

chan->clear();

and

glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT);

Or does chan->clear do something deeper that I don't understand. In all
reality all I want to do is change the clear color and I can't find an
interface in Performer to do it, but I know how to make GL do it.
