Hi Brian,
Here are my two cents worth...
If you have an NT machine lying around I would suggest that DirectX
(DirectSound) will provide the best bang for you buck (then again, it is
free) - the API is mature and stable.
Next in line would be OpenAL (alot less mature, but Unix friendly and
portable).
Finally for relatively simple applications I would suggest that you have a
look at Steve Baker's Sound Library (SL) which is currently bundeled into
the PLIB game library (http://plib.sourceforge.net).
If you want to shell out a few bucks there is of course the AudioWorks
component of Vega available from MultiGen-Paradigm. A fine API, but it is
bundeled with Vega.
Cheers,
Murray

Subject: Looking for "sound" advice
Hello all,
I am in search of some "sound" advice for an immersive environment. I have
little experience with sound other than using playaiff to play a sound clip
for emphasis. We have a simulator that we are working on that requires an
engine sound to change based on the RPM of a piece of machinery. It is
likely that we will want to mix other machinery sounds into the system in
the near future. During this phase of our project we want to keep it fairly
simple and don't require spatialized sound. We just want to add a bit of
realism in terms of ambient noise that is meaningful in the environment. We
are interested in more sophistacted solutions in the future but for now
something simple...
Packages that I am aware of are the Vanilla Sound Server from NCSA. There
was a "caveSound" library for IRIX that I saw a mention of from U Michigan a
while ago, but I haven't had any luck tracking that down. Another obvious
choice is to use an NT box and DirectX for the sound and have information
passed to it from the simulation engine. We are looking at all of the above.
Platforms of interest are IRIX, NT, or Linux. Does anyone have any advice on
where to start. There is too much mediocre info out there on sound and not
enough relevant stuff that I have been able to find thus far.
Any pointers???
Brian
