I thought that the Inventor loader would not compile/work without
having previously installed Open Inventor. Can anyone verify this?

A way around it is to convert the Inventor file to a Performer binary
using pfconv on an IRIX platform, and then to load the resulting .pfb
file
on the target Linux platform. Ofcourse, this isn't much help if you
don't
have access to an IRIX platform!
