A TNT2 should be able to do a lot better than that. My K6-2/300 with a
Voodoo Banshee card at home gets from 12-20 fps on Performer Town, and
it's not nearly as good as as your system. It sounds like OpenGL is not
set up for hardware acceleration on your system. The Performer for Linux
FAQ on SGI's web site has a few things you can try to get it working.

If you're running XFree86 3.x, make sure the hardware accelerated driver
(often in /usr/X11R6/lib) is being used. You may have to link
/usr/lib/libGL.so to that driver. If you're using XFree86 4.0 then
Nvidia's FAQ for their XFree86 4.0 drivers should be able to help also.
