determining a monitor's stereo/mono graphics state

Hi,

Briefly, I'm trying to write a Performer application that runs in stereo
when the user's monitor is set to stereo, and mono when the user's
monitor is running in mono.

I'm not trying to change when running (although this would be a nifty
thing to do if possible!), but just determine it at start-up within my
application.

I'm looking for some sort of call I can make to determine a monitor's
stereo/mono mode before I open my windows, so I can run as appropriate.

It would be best if I can do this on a per-PipeWindow basis, especially
for our multi-piped machines.

Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated.
