SGI .rgb files.

If you're using convert, save the image with the .sgi extension. With
convert, rgb is a different file format than the SGI one. Also, display
is from the same suite of programs as convert. I suspect they use the
same routines. You probably also need to save as a .sgi file.

Gimp has worked fine for me. When you go to save the file, if it pops up
a dialog asking you about RLE (Run-Length Encoding), then gimp found the
right plugin and you should be fine. If you don't see this, then I
suspect either gimp is getting confused or it can't find the SGI plugin
and is using another one instead. I've also saved files with the .sgi in
Gimp and had it work fine. You could try that if all else
fails. pfLoadTexImage() uses iopen() which doesn't look at the extension
on the filename, it just reads the file and tries to identify it from the
contents.

hope that helps,
tom
